How to create a WordPress Blog, easy steps

how to create WordPress blog

Blogging is fun and a lot of youths are into this in other to share their passion for writing and information dissemination while others hope someday, they will make money from it once they attract some considerable amount of traffic. When we talk about creating a blog, the first thought that comes to mind is wordpress. In this tutorial we are going to take a comprehensive step by step journey through how to create a wordpress web site conveniently from your cPanel simply by installing it through softacolous.

What is WordPress?

WordPress is an online, open source content management system written in PHP, it’s probably the easiest and most robost blogging and Content Management System (CMS) in existence today. When we initially talk about content management the first application that was very popular and dominated the game was “Joomla”, but that seems to have change as WordPress is now capable of creating any type of site including online shopping stores that was left to eCommerce shopping cart script like prestshop. Thanks to wordpress plugin developers that is making life so easy.

First and foremost, there are certain things to put into consideration before you go to the actual process of creating your blog. We will now consider the following ideas that sets you up for a successful web site creation:

Choose an interest

Before you ever take the step further to creating your wordpress web site, it is very important you know what you want to write about. Firstly, your blog should be focused around an idea and for doing well in this, it is best you choose an interest that you love and have some considerable amount of knowledge about so writing become easy. Getting contents is not that difficult though, but you should be able to present your articles professionally because you know what you are doing not just because you found the topic on the internet.

There are several areas that you can blog about including fashion, music, information technology as a matter of fact the list is virtually endless.

Choose the right web site name (Domain name) for your blog.

Once you know your interest, choosing the good domain name to speak about your interest. This  should not difficult to do. Some tips you may want to consider when choosing a domain name are:

  1. A nice domain name for your site should be short and easy to remember.
  2. It will be better to have keywords in your domain name.
  3. Avoid names that infringe on another web site.
  4. If the domain name you have in mind is not available, it is ok to have a slight change, you can add a word.

Choose the site hosting provider

This is very important since this will determine the success or failure of your web site. All web hosting company offers wordpress as a must but not all web hosting support certain features while reliability is one thing; features is another. Blogs have the capacity to grow quickly in traffic because search engine loves contents. If you don’t a good amount of bandwidth for your use, this can pose a big problem.

We are glad to let you know we have the right wordpress hosting packages and most Nigeria blogger love us for that.

Installing WordPress

Now that you have choosing your hosting package, I presume you have bought one and received your login details. Let officially go through the actual steps for installing wordpress.

Login to your control panel using your username and password as provided.

Scroll down to “Software’s and Services” and click on “Softacolous app Installer”

Softacolous Autoinstaller for wordpress

At times you may even see wordpress icon displays on your cpanel by the bottom of the page that is displayed in the image below and if this be the case, you can simply click on it without clicking on Softacolous as  have explained above

Wordpress

If you have clicked softacolous, you will be taking to the home screen where you can click on “Install” button close to WordPress Icon:

Softacolous Home screen

The next screen is where to enter important details for your wordpress installation. I will now explain some of the important settings as follows:

Wordpress installation settings

The first option there is “Choose Protocol” this where you choose whether you are using normal http protocol to connect to your website or secure https connection if you have SSL certificate installed on your web site. For now choosing the default “http” will be fine.

The next is “Choose Domain” by default your domain name will be displayed unless you have added another domain name to your hosting account.

The next option can be tricky for most first timer. “In Directory” the instructions are there already for you to follow, so you should delete whatever is contained in the text box since we are using the entire web site for our blog. But if you are using an existing domain name and wish to have a blog installed like some similar to this http://mydomain.com/blog, you only need to enter “blog” in the space instead of leaving it empty; in this you are telling softacolous to create a new directory.

Other setting are “Site Name” which should contain the name of your site as indicated, this part is visible on your browser though  the title bar. Site Description should give a brief introduction about what your blog is about..

Next you can enter your user name and password to be used for logging to the admin area when installation is complete.

Lastly you can choose a template that best suit the type of web site blog you intend to create and finally click on the install button.

The final screen display installation compete detail with your admin login url, where you can enter the admin details you provided during filling out the settings.

If you have followed this instruction correctly you should be able to login to your admin area and see something like this

Wordpress Dashboard

I am glad to have been able to put this piece of tutorial together and I hope it has serves you well. If  you have any questions, comments of contribution, don’t hesitate to get back to us via support@vbhostnet.com

Understanding Cloud Hosting

Cloud HostingIn the past few decades, the internet has experience tremendous growth and change as web site and application is more demanding of server resource such as CPU and RAM. To be frank, a lot of web site are no longer suitable for shared hosing environment and a lot more will outgrow shared hosting environment due to increase in traffic, database interaction and more. Cloud hosting has become one of the latest technologies that are based on innovation since it has become extremely popular over the past few years. Its ideologies revolve around sharing resource amongst more than one web server or breaking a large dedicated server.

What really is Cloud Hosting?

Cloud hosting is a method of configuring servers in a flexible way to allow for the most cost effective service, scalable, secured and robust web infrastructure. The term “Cloud hosting” actually originates from “Cloud Computing”, where two and more computers are connected or broken down in a system, It provide hosting on virtual servers which get their server resources from extensive underlying networks of physical web servers. Cloud technology allows easy integration of extra server resources, such as Space or RAM and thus enable website growth this is true availability.

Benefits Cloud Hosting

  1. Guaranteed server resources (CPU, RAM, IP address e.t.c)
  2. Highest level of website performance
  3. Scalability and  flexibility: Extra server resource can be accessed easily and when needed
  4. Redundant data storage
  5. Affordable price for more features

Cloud hosting service is suitable for all types of web site or web applications. The following scenario is an indication your web site need to leave the shared hosting environment:

High Resource Applications. If an application requires a lot of CPU, Memory and huge database activities. Sometimes certain application may require longer timeout in order to complete successfully. In such cases cloud hosting is the most affordable and efficient solution to look out for.

Applications requiring special server configuration. Shared hosting environment has limitation as to which PHP or Apache configuration is allowed and this may not be suited for certain application. As developer if certain server features need to be enabled and cannot get this freedom from a shared hosting platform, then hosting in the cloud should be consider thereof.

Cloud Hosting ensures enough resources for average needs. As an example, a forum with 100 000 users with more than 100 – 200 users online simultaneously should be handled without problems on a cloud server. When a blog constantly get suspended due to resource abuse even after the necessary WordPress optimization employed, this is an indication you need to move to the cloud.

POP and IMAP email Protocols – Comparative Analysis

Imap and POP

Electronic mail services is a very exciting and important aspect of a web hosting service. Creating one for your site is easily done with a few mouse clicks here and there. However, accessing your email through an email client (software) is a more technical thing to consider.

IMAP – Internet Message Access Protocol

IMAP was created in the year 1986. and works in a way that whenever you log into an email client configured with the IMAP protocol, it automatically detect any changes you make to the remote email server.

IMAP won’t delete the email from the server after downloading to your device, and will keep any in tact any changes you make such as replies, read status, and record all other actions done from your email client.  This means that whether you log into your email server from your PC, tablet, or smartphone your emails will be synchronized across all devices.

By default, the IMAP protocol works on two ports:

  1. Port 143 – this is the default IMAP non-encrypted port
  2. Port 993 – this is the port you need to use if you want to connect using IMAP securely

POP – Post Office Protocol

POP3 on the other hand, is a protocol that has been around for a quite a long time, with the POP1 which was created in 1984, and POP2 in early 1985 and POP3 which is the current version was created in 1988 and remains one of the most popular email protocols in use today.

POP3 works quite differently from IMAP and will download any messages you have from the email server, and any changes you make will be limited totally to the copy you have on your computer.  In other words, if you delete, copy, move or send messages they will exist only on your local system, and anyone accessing the email from another location will not know of any changes made.

Although most POP clients have the option to leave a copy of the messages on the server, they commonly connect, retrieve the messages and store them in your email client/software, and then delete the message from the remote server.

By default, the POP3 protocol works on two ports:

  1. Port 110 – this is the default POP3 non-encrypted port
  2. Port 995 – this is the port you need to use if you want to connect using POP3 securely

IMAP vs POP– Which option should i use?

This is a matter of personal choice, IMAP is popular and preferred because it allows access to emails everywhere, and we have a backup of all our emails online.  If you are using cPanel hosting, and ever change hosting providers they will usually copy across your whole website, and emails by copying the entire cPanel account.   Thus, if you check your email on your computer, tablet or smartphone, and want flexibility of having the email synchronize across all devices, then IMAP is definitely the way to go.

POP3 may be the option to go, if you have limited web space on the server, as IMAP can take up a lot of space with very active email accounts.  Hence, if you simply use your email account on one machine, and don’t really care about keeping an online copy of your email messages, then POP3 may be just fine.

Webmail vs Email Client

We have successfully go through some comparative thought between the two email protocols.  The next choice is whether you should use an email client (either Thunderbird , Outlook, WindowsLive mail, etc.) or whether you should simply stick to the tradition webmail.

Webmail

The merit of a Webmail service is that you have the freedom to access your emails through any web browser at any time from any location.  There is no need for a program to download or configure, as with cPanel they are usually pre-configured with stuffs like Horde, Roundcube, and SquirrelMail.  However, many people will just add their email accounts to their Gmail or Hotmail, which allow you to collate all your different types of emails together – i.e. Outlook and Gmail can act as an Email Client but is web-based.

What is Digital Marketing?

Digital Marketing

Digital marketing in a simple term is the promotional activities of products/service or brands through one or more forms of electronic (digital) media. Digital marketing utilizes multiple channels such as social media, content marketing, influencer marketing, SEO, and other online advertising to help brands connect with customers and analyze marketing campaigns in real time.

Digital marketers monitor things like what is being viewed, how often and for how long, sales conversions, what content works and doesn’t work, etc. While digital marketing is not limited to the use of Internet, others include mobile instant messaging, electronic billboards, wireless text messaging, mobile apps, podcasts, digital television e.t.c.

The Importance of Digital Marketing

Before we look at the benefits of digital marketing, let’s take a quick snapshot of some of the key forms of it at present:

  1. Content Marketing
  2. Blogs – WordPress
  3. Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising ex Adword
  4. Internet Banner Ads
  5. Online Video Content
  6. Email marketing
  7. Social Media Marketing –  SMM (Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, YouTube e.t.c.)
  8. Mobile marketing (SMS and MMS)

First and foremost, digital marketing is more affordable than the traditional offline marketing methods. On a comparative analysis, an email or social media campaign, as an example, can transmit a marketing message to consumers for little fraction of cost when compared to TV ad or print campaign, and potentially reach a wider audience.

In addition to be a cost effective method, you have the benefits of conducting your marketing performance digitally in which results can be tracked and monitored real-time. Instead of conducting expensive customer research and paper works, you can quickly view customer response rates and measure the success of your marketing campaign online, enabling you to plan more effectively for the next one or discarding strategies that don’t work for you.

Perhaps the strongest case for incorporating a digital strategy into your marketing is that digital media forms are quickly overtaking traditional forms of information consumption.

The truth is, digital methods of communication and marketing are faster, more versatile, practical and flexible, so it is perhaps unsurprising that once the technology became available we all began quickly embrace it and move into the digital age. The good news is that digital marketing offers just as much potential to marketers as it does to consumers. Digital age is here, and businesses that fail to adapt to the new marketing technology are at great risk of going extinct sooner or later.
